Excel Institute was established in 1995 as a private non-profit corporation designed to serve the mentally challenged.
Since its inception, Excel has been committed to meeting the educational needs of special populations desiring to
experience academic success in their education endeavors. Certified educators work with other Individual Education
Plan team members to design each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). This team ensures that the IEP
maximizes all learning experiences and offers a variety of instructional, functional and vocational opportunities that
will provide each student the opportunity to achieve desired outcomes.
EDUCATIONAL FOCUS
The program of study for the Excel Institute has as its foundation the goals, objectives, and student outcomes defined
by the Alabama State Courses of Study for Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical
Education, Health, Art, and Music.
All students are assessed utilizing norm-referenced and criterion-referenced assessments to determine both ability
and achievement levels. Individual Education Plans are developed for each student based on assessment data and
other relevant indicators. This information is utilized to determine the appropriate goals, objectives, and student
outcomes for each student and is the basis for determining individual student progress and success. Necessary
adjustments will be make to provide each student the program that will result in the greatest acquisition and retention
of skills. Both student and program success will be monitored and documented in order to demonstrate improvement
and to provide data to support program success for replication purposes.
